Week 4: MedTech and Art

Image
The human body can be seen as a work of art in-and-of-itself. Human bodies have been center pieces of so many famous paintings and statues, but some may see art on the inside of human bodies. Human dissection is at the heart of art and science.  The Study of Human Anatomy and the Corpses of Vienna . (n.d.). JSTOR Daily. Andreas Vesalius is an author of one of the most influential books on the topic of anatomy which translated to "The Structure of the Human Body". Vesalius is often referred to as the founder of modern human anatomy. He is still helpful today in a sense that he was the first one to every correctly record the internal human anatomy. Event 1: Moment of Reflection

Image
On April 19th, I attended the event "Moment of Reflection" in the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden at UCLA. Chancellor Gene Block explained the space to be a space that one can come to reflect on rough past couple of years and be able to be hopeful for the future years to come.  The start of the ceremony. At the event, Refik Anadol's "Machine Simulations: Nature" was presented (pictured below). This is a multi-sensory experience that uses 300 million photos of nature from over the course of the pandemic and sounds to match the movement of the pictures to hopefully create a space for healing during the hard times of the pandemic. The 300 million pictures are set up in data sets to make the photographs come to life. Meaning, it looked like the photos were moving in a wave-like motion.  The one of multiple multi-sensory experiences.  Before the ceremony, all attendees were given small, blue and felt bags that we were not allowed to open until directed by the sp...

Week 3: Robotics and Art

Image
Robotics and art can be traced back to the creation of the printing press. The printing press helped create a system of the assembly line that gave human workers different roles throughout the assembly line. Companies, such as Ford, would go too far with their assembly line by using Taylorism towards their workers, which was how they treated the workers like they were parts of machines.   Us Textile Mill . Cars also were not always seen as just a mode of transportation back in the early 20th century. In 1909, in a manifesto written in Le Figaro, a French newspaper, the automobile was described as a thing of beauty that was ...

Week 2: Art and Math

Image
When one thinks of art and math, they usually would think that they are complete opposites of each other. Going off of what was discussed in my week 1 blog, even UCLA students separate art and math majors with north and south campus, and with that comes with its own stereotypes. Art and math correlate to each other more than the average person would think. If you think of making a painting, you would probably measure out the dimensions of the art, therefore using math in art. Famous artists, such as Leonardo de Vinci, use math for their art that allows for different perspectives while looking at their work. He used techniques like linear prospective. Even in a two-dimensional painting, Vinci was able to show depth in the painting. He was able to do this by using tilted lines and shadows.   Mona Lisa . (n.d.). Wikipedia .
