Week 3: Robotics and Art

Robotics and art can be traced back to the creation of the printing press. The printing press helped create a system of the assembly line that gave human workers different roles throughout the assembly line. Companies, such as Ford, would go too far with their assembly line by using Taylorism towards their workers, which was how they treated the workers like they were parts of machines.

Cars also were not always seen as just a mode of transportation back in the early 20th century. In 1909, in a manifesto written in Le Figaro, a French newspaper, the automobile was described as a thing of beauty that was higher than sculptures. Meaning, people saw automobiles to be more of works of art than actual art pieces, such as sculptures. Even today, people value cars very highly and vehicles are sold daily from prices ranging from thousands to billions of dollars.

This relationship between human and machines, though, really started with computers. The development of the computer started as early as BC times, when the Chinese created the abacus. Perry Hoberman, who was inspired by Micheal Faraday, a contributor to the development of electromagnetism and electrochemistry, created a ‘garden’ of household and office appliances, named “Faraday’s Garden”. These appliances would sit silently until a force of pressure was felt on the trigger (on the floor). Whenever the pressure was felt, certain appliances would go off. So the more people that there would be, the more noises and appliances would go off. It is seen to be a technology garden that shows that machines are, in a way, alive and respond to human presence.

  1. Hi Hannah! I really enjoyed your blog post today! I thought that your insight on how robotics was started was very interesting. I also enjoyed the lens of how cars can be considered art work, this was an aspect that I neglected to consider. what do you think the most useful version of the robotics and art that you can think of?
