Week 8: Nanotech + Art

 Nanotechnology was termed that was coined by Norio Taniguchi while he was describing "semiconductor processes such as thin film deposition and ion beam milling exhibiting characteristic control on the order of a nanometer" (1:49). Nanotechnology is the process of manipulating matter in a nano-metric scale that is used to create new structures, materials or devices. The scale that the matter is measured on is from 1-100 nanometers.

Nanometers are measured from three scales of a thousand. If we were to start at a human body, which would be measured in meters, and go down a thousand times, we would be at the size of an ant, which would be measured with millimeters. If we were to go another thousand times down, we would be at cells, which is measured by micrometers. With one more thousand times down, we would be at viruses, which is measured by nanometers.

Nanotech and art can be connected because the structures that these nanoparticles create is art. In "Nanotech for Artists Part 2", it gives examples of different structures that are pictured so close that the atoms are able to be seen, such as the needle that the tip was seen to be a single atom. One of the structures that I found to be more interesting was the 7x7 reconstruction. This configuration is created when a Silicon surface is heated to such a high temperature that the atoms on the surface rearrange to an energetically stable configuration.

Event 3: Toni Dove

 On May 28th, I attended Toni Dove's discussion about her embodied machines that are on display in museums. The exhibit that she was talking about the stood out was her "The Dress That Eats Souls". This display is an interactive video and robotic installation. To work it, an individual stands on the podium and starts to move around. The dress, who uses motion sensors, has a visceral relationship with the individual that is participating and behaves as if they are wearing the dress themselves. Above the dress is a screen that will allow the individual to see through the lens of people who have worn the dress in the last 200 years. The individual participating is able to move their head to move the lens around so that they can see things from the past.  This dress shows the relationship of art, technology, and robotics. Event 2: The Mortal Plastik

 "The Mortal Plastik" is a short film by Jess Irish, who is one of many people that is concerned with the wellbeing of the earth. The short film focuses on one of earth and nature's worst enemies: plastic.  Plastics are everywhere we look and now in the 21st century, every facet in life is attributed with petroleum plastics. The invention of plastics had the intention to make life easier and have a low cost option for things. Plastics have been dominating the world since they have been discovered. The ocean is the most affected from the invention and use of plastics. There are different types of plastics that have different affects on the marine life, but all effects being negative.  Irish brings attention to the problem that our world has with plastic.
