Week 9: Space + Art

Image
The topic of space ties in almost all of the topics that we have discussed this quarter: math, art, consciousness are some. Space is something that we know a lot about, but there is still so much about it that is unknown. When I first think of space and art together, I first think of star constellations, such as the little and big dipper. Many things that are in space can be seen as art, such as shooting stars, comets, and the different planets. There is also the Milky Way.  Launching satellites and careers, WSU Insider  If it is looked at in a biblical way, one could say that space and earth, being a planet, is God's artwork. He spent so much time trying to perfect the world and the future worlds that we have discovered and the worlds that we are still discovering.  "Why Did God Create Anything?", Southern Evangelical Seminary  In a video by Carl Sagan called "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space",  Sagan explores the possibilities of futu...

Week 8: Nanotech + Art

Image
Nanotechnology was termed that was coined by Norio Taniguchi while he was describing "semiconductor processes such as thin film deposition and ion beam milling exhibiting characteristic control on the order of a nanometer" (1:49). Nanotechnology is the process of manipulating matter in a nano-metric scale that is used to create new structures, materials or devices. The scale that the matter is measured on is from 1-100 nanometers.  Investing News Network , https://investingnews.com/media-library/what-is-nanotechnology-used-for.jpg?id=27737634&width=1200&quality=85&coordinates=0%2C0%2C0%2C0&height=800. Nanometers are measured from three scales of a thousand. If we were to start at a human body, which would be measured in meters, and go down a thousand times, we would be at the size of an ant, which would be measured with millimeters. If we were to go another thousand times down, we would be at cells, which is measured by micrometers. With one more thousand tim...

Week 7: Neurosci and Art

Image
The human body is an impeccable work of art, but it is all controlled by a more powerful art form: the brain. The brain is a complex and intricate art piece that not a lot of people get the chance to understand. There are so many functions of the brain, consciousness and memory being two of many. Consciousness is "the state or condition of being conscious". This is a purpose of one's personal identity. Memory is the psychological processes that take in, store, maintain, and recover information in the brain.  "Shelter in Place" by Geinene Carson Franz Joseph Gall developed phrenology. Phrenology is the study of the skull's shape and how it affects mental facilities and character traits. He wanted to be able to examine one mentally while actually examining their skull physically. Gall thought that local functions were located in certain parts of the brain (i.e. there was a different area for study/learning than there was for sports/being active) and the human ...

Event 2: The Mortal Plastik

Image
"The Mortal Plastik" is a short film by Jess Irish, who is one of many people that is concerned with the wellbeing of the earth. The short film focuses on one of earth and nature's worst enemies: plastic.  Plastics are everywhere we look and now in the 21st century, every facet in life is attributed with petroleum plastics. The invention of plastics had the intention to make life easier and have a low cost option for things. Plastics have been dominating the world since they have been discovered. The ocean is the most affected from the invention and use of plastics. There are different types of plastics that have different affects on the marine life, but all effects being negative.  Irish brings attention to the problem that our world has with plastic. She explained that not only is it up to us to help put an end to this problem, but corporations and governments. Although people stop using plastic, does not mean the problem is going away because corporations are still us...

Week 6: BioTech and Art

Image
BioTech is short for biotechnology, which is using cellular and bimolecular processes to create technologies and products that look to improve our lives. BioArt is when science and technology is evolving results to ideas for artists to evolve. BioArt acts as a bridge between art and science, where the focus is on genetics and medicine in an art form (ARTDEX). Scientists are able to find art in biotech, such as Joe Davis and Eduardo Kac.  Ou, Xiawei. Ars Technica , “BioArt: An Introduction.” EurekAlert!, https://earimediaprodweb.azurewebsites.net/Api/v1/Multimedia/99cd73d0-0996-48a5-bab2-6a564cc38c4d/Rendition/low-res/Content/Public. . Davis is considered to be the pioneer of BioArt. Not only did he work with painting, but he workds with genes and bacteria (CellPressNews). His ideas were viewed by other scientists as dangerous, like his idea of synthesizing DNA and inserting them into living bacteria's genomes. He also created the audio microscope project. This project allowed...
